Caring for Your Pressure Washer Through Cold Weather

Fall has begun which means colder weather is on the way. If your pressure washer isn’t properly protected against freezing temperatures, a cold snap could do serious damage to its internal components.

Fortunately, all it takes is a few simple steps to keep your pressure washer safe throughout the winter:

storage

If possible, store your pressure washer in a heated area at all times. It is important to prevent residual water in the pressure washer from freezing. If the water is allowed to freeze, it will expand and potentially break the pump and other critical components. As long as you can keep your machine warm, you can continue to use it all year round. A small space heater in a garage will do, just take care to remove any nearby combustibles.

winterizing

If you don’t have a warm place to store your pressure washer or you don’t plan on using it during the winter, you should take a few extra steps to protect it from cold damage. Start by filling the empty float tank with anti-freeze, and then fire up the pressure washer to spray out any residual water. Remove the wand spray tip and continue recirculating the anti-freeze through the pressure washer until the tank is empty. This will protect the pump and plumbing from freezing during the winter. Use a 5-gallon bucket to catch the anti-freeze so you can reuse it later.

Once you’ve flushed the system with anti-freeze, top off the motor with oil, disconnect the hose and gun, and store them in a safe place. Add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank as well and run the engine for a few minutes once a month to make it easier to start-up in the spring.
