Tips to Maintain Your Pressure Washer

While pressure washers are engineered to get the job done, they’re nothing without regular maintenance. And, frankly, there are several routine tasks that you can do yourself to make sure your pressure washer is always running smoothly. Regular maintenance can save you time and money by avoiding more serious issues that will result in costly repairs.

Here are a few DIY pressure washer maintenance tips to keep in mind:

Tips to maintain your pressure washer

change the oil

It would make a lot of sense to keep the “well-oiled machine” well-oiled, of course.

Regularly changing the oil will ensure that the many moving parts of your pressure washer keep functioning properly, without friction.

If you don’t change your oil, debris will start to accumulate, thickening the oil and making your pressure washer work harder than is necessary. A change of oil once a month should do the trick.

lubricate your pressure washer parts often

One of the keys to ensuring longevity with a pressure washer is to constantly add lubrication.

Whether it’s the extension wand, the spray gun, or the hose itself, you’ll want to add any sort of lubricating oil that you have to these parts, in order to prevent wear-and-tear over time.

clean the cleaning machine

With such high-pressured water, it’s no surprise when debris or dirt gets inside of the pressure washer itself—this is all too common. But you don’t want this sediment to build up, and ultimately crack the machine. So, after every spray, do your due diligence to clean up all of the parts.

check the o-ring

It may be small, but the O-ring is one of the most crucial parts of any pressure washers. Why? Due to daily wear-and-tear, these rings can erode, which leads to water leakage and damage to the pressure washer. So always make sure the O-ring is either new or functioning properly. These can be easily replaced so it is best to order back up O-rings just in case.

check the power

If your pressure washer is gas-powered, make sure to do a routine check to see if anything’s blocking the exhaust that powers the machine.

If it’s electric-powered, then ensure its well-insulated, and that everything is running just right.

evaluate the cooling vents

As you can see, debris buildup is a reoccurring theme when it comes to pressure washers. Clearing the debris from your cooling vents is just another item to add to the list! Keeping this area clear will improve ventilation and air circulation within your machine.

flush out the excess detergent

It’s proper pressure washer etiquette to flush out the remaining detergent from your detergent injection tubes after every use. Though it may seem tedious, it’s essential to keeping your tubes unclogged and residue-free.

de-pressurize your pressure after each use

Let the pressure out of your pressure washer after every use, as well. Release all of the remaining water from the line by simply holding down on your spray gun and disconnect your hose from your spray gun and pump.

After Each Use:

Before packing your pressure washer away, there are a few things you should do to ensure it is shut down and stored safely.

  • If you used soap be sure to run the water through the hose to remove any remaining soap.
  • Next, detach the hose and drain any remaking water from the hose and nozzle.
  • Store your pressure washer in a clean dry place out of the way.
  • Use a tarp or sheet to cover it and protect it from dust and other dirt.

when in doubt, bring in the professionals

You’ve gone through your entire maintenance checklist and yet for some reason, you’re still finding issues with your trusted pressure washer. This is a tell-tale sign that it’s time to call in the experts. Experienced pressure washer service technicians will be able to get your machine up and running in a flash!
