The water pump is essentially the heart of your pressure washer; without it, your machine can not operate. That’s why you need to take extra measures to ensure that it is in full working order.

Most people who use a high-powered pressure washer describe the water as developing a milky color. If the water contains a lot of visibly loose particles mixed in, then you most likely have to change the oil in your pump.
To do that, you’re going to need to purchase non-detergent oil. This type of oil prevents rusting and foaming. Never load your machine with used oil and always properly dispose of the old oil after each fill.
when you should change it
If you purchased a brand new pressure washer, it is recommended that you change the pump oil after 30-50 hours of operation. After that it's 300 hours or once a quarter. If you plan to use your machine frequently, you’ll want to do routine maintenance on it and change the oil at least every three months.

You can rinse your pump of contaminants by taking some preventative measures. This includes removing the wand from the spray gun and starting the engine. Let the water stream for a few minutes, then activate the safety latch and reattach the wand back in place.
