Pressure washer maintenance tips for 3 common problems

Why is my pressure washer losing pressure?

As its name suggests, pressure is one of the most important aspects of a properly functioning pressure washer. Without pressure, you will not be able to blast away the grease, grime, and dirt that you use your machine for in the first place.

Pressure issues can occur in even the most well-crafted washers, and you might notice them in a number of ways, including:

  • No pressure
  • Low pressure
  • Pulsating and/or inconsistent pressure

Each of these brings with it its own set of problems. No pressure will result in dribbling water, low pressure will significantly reduce your cleaning abilities, and pulsating pressure can actually create spikes in pressure that damage your surface or drops in pressure that decrease cleaning abilities.

The reasoning behind these pressure issues could be a number of things, namely:

  • Insufficient water source
  • Incorrect nozzle size
  • Blockage in the water flow
  • Kink in the hose

So, all is not lost when low on pressure — it just means that you have to fix those small kinks! Check your water inlet and unblock your hose to let the water flow through with ease. If you are still experiencing issues with your pressure, consult a professional at NorTex Sales & Service.

why is my pressure washer pump leaking?

Leaks from your pressure washer can compound into more serious problems if not addressed appropriately. Again, there are a few culprits that could have caused this issue:

  • Damaged pressure seals
  • Activated thermal valve

If your pressure seals are damaged or broken completely, the fix is to simply replace them. If it’s not your seals, check your thermal valve; it may have activated to release the hot water in order to protect the pump. Turn your pressure washer off, let it cool, and you should be ready to get back to cleaning shortly thereafter.

Though not as damaging to your machine or your operations, there are a couple of other areas you might notice leakage. If your garden hose or comparable water source is leaking, simply tighten the connection to prevent it.

If you notice leakage around the spray wand, you might have a slightly bigger but still manageable repair on your hands. It’s quite possible that the O-rings inside the wand are broken, in which case you must replace them to prevent leakage and ensure optimal productivity.

why is oil leaking from my pressure washer?

A common problem with an easy solution: oil leakage. Usually, oil leakage means that you have a few bolts loose or your seals are damaged. Tighten all loose-fitting bolts and replace all necessary pressure seals and you should be good to go!

The other common oil-related problem many pressure washer users encounter is when your pump oil becomes milky. This is almost always caused by water leaking into the oil gasket in one of two ways:

  • Damaged oil seals
  • Damaged water heat exchanger
  • Crack in plungers
