Choosing a Pressure Washer: Belt-Drive vs. Direct-Drive Pump

When it comes to choosing a pressure washer, there are a number of factors to take into consideration:

  • What kind of property you have
  • The extent of the job in which a pressure washer is needed
  • The temperature of the water you’re looking for

But another integral factor that is often overlooked is the type of pressure washer. And for that, there are really two major options: belt-drive, vs. direct-drive pump.

what is a belt-drive?

You’d most likely find a belt-driven pressure washer with our more heavy-duty pressure washers. That’s because a belt-drive system requires a gear reduction pulley system, where pumps turn at a slower motion.

When this happens, less heat and vibrations will be emitted, which greatly decreases the chance of wear and tear. (That’s great for maintenance's sake.)

It’s a great long-term investment, as these products do last for a while, and are best applied to regularly occurring situations that are more industrial or commercial.

what is direct-Drive?

Instead of being connected to a gear reduction pulley system, direct-drive pumps are exactly what they sound like: directly connected to the engine itself, which means the washer runs at about the same speed of the engine itself.

These pumps are usually made for household jobs, as the machine itself is easy to transport. The direct connection does, however, mean that it degrades quicker. That said, they’re best for owners who don’t need a pressure washer all of the time, but when they do, it’s certain to get the job done.

With these differences in mind, you’ll be able to choose the type of pressure washer that’s best for you.
