How to Pressure Wash Your Home

When years of dirt, soot, and grime build up on the exterior of your home, it can negatively impact your home’s curb appeal. If you’ve grown tired of looking at the dirt pile up on your brick or siding, there’s only one tool for the job: a Hotsy pressure washer.
Pressure washing your home is a great way to get a thorough clean and restore the integrity of your home’s appearance.
Here are a few tips to help pressure wash your home:

Home’s best suited for pressure washing have siding made from wood, brick, aluminum, vinyl or steel. The PSI levels will vary depending on what materials your home was built with. Be sure to use the correct PSI to avoid damaging your siding.
Before you begin, be sure to dress properly for the job:
- Close-toed shoes/ boots
- Wear eye protection
- Long pants or jeans
- Utility gloves
- Hearing protection headphones
Use the pressure washer responsibly, never spray anyone or yourself. The intensity of the water coming from a pressure washer can cause blindness and tear skin, so it is important to only spray the object you are cleaning.
Never use a ladder when operating a pressure washer. If you have multiple levels to clean, do not use a ladder. The recoil on a pressure washer is strong enough to throw your balance off, resulting in serious injury.
If you need to wash more than one story it is best to use a lockable scaffolding. This will ensure that your footing remains secure. You can purchase or rent scaffolding from your local hardware store.
The final step before you begin washing is to prep your work area. The last thing you want to do is begin washing and realize that you don’t have all your supplies or haven’t properly prepared the workspace.
Protect your shrubs, lawn, and garden with drop cloths secured with tape to ensure they do not become damaged during this process.
With your workspace prepped, you can begin pressure washing.
select the right nozzle for the job
For harder surfaces and a higher psi, use a 15-degree spray nozzle. For softer surfaces and lower psi, choose a 25- or 30-degree nozzle.

Stand about three feet from the wall you are washing and begin with the nozzle angled upward. Start slowly, to get a feel of the intensity of your pressure washer. If you are cleaning a multi-story home using a scaffolding, start at the highest level and slowly use the pressure washer, and work your way downward.

If you are planning to paint your home, be sure to wait a few days to allow the exterior to fully dry before you begin painting.
