5 Tools To Winterize your Power Washer

Winterize a Hotsy Electric Pressure Washer


For Hotsy Electric Pressure Washers, it is recommended to use automotive engine antifreeze or windshield washer solvent to antifreeze. 


Store machine in a warm, heated area and flush the system with antifreeze or windshield washer solvent to antifreeze to prevent freezing. 


These steps can be followed for the following models; 555 HE, 555 SS, 558, 560 SS, 790 SS, 790 SS - 208, 795 SS, 795 SS - 208, 895 SS.


1. Attach a hose to the garden hose connector located on the pump.

2. Connect the other end of the hose into a container of antifreeze.

3. Turn machine on.

4. Let antifreeze flow into the machine from the end of the wand.


Tip: Let machine run for 2 - 3 minutes to make sure antifreeze has a chance to flow through the machine. 


5. Press trigger on the trigger gun to circulate antifreeze through machine.

6. Squeeze and release the trigger gun several times after holding it for a few seconds to make sure the antifreeze flows into the unloader system.

7. Draw antifreeze through the detergent inlet line to antifreeze the detergent system.


Tip: For added protection after running antifreeze through machine, disconnect the pressure hose and remove the coil drain plug. After coil has drained, replace pressure hose and coil drain plug.


8. Unplug your pressure washer and store it in an warm area (40 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer). Do not store flammable liquids near pressure washer or in a non-ventilated area.


Tip: Remove the lance, spray gun, and hose (optional) from your pressure washer before putting it in storage.


The two main things to do when winterizing your pressure washer is to make sure all the fluids have been drained and running anti-freeze through the system to protect from freezing and damage while in storage. 


Winterize a Hotsy Electric Pressure Washer - Float Tank


For Hotsy Electric Pressure Washers, it is recommended to use automotive engine antifreeze or windshield washer solvent to antifreeze. These steps can be followed for the following models; 680 SS, 771/772, 800 Mobile Oil-Fired Series, 900/1400 Gas-Fired Series, Stationary Electric, 965 B, 1075 BE, 1080 BE, 1200 Series, 5645.


1. Fill float tank with antifreeze.

2. Remove pressure nozzle from the wand.

3. Turn machine on.

4. Let machine run until antifreeze flows from the end of the wand.

5. Place the end of the wand into float tank to circulate the antifreeze through the system. 


Tip: Let machine run for 2 - 3 minutes to make sure antifreeze has a chance to flow through the machine. 


6. Press trigger on the trigger gun to circulate antifreeze through machine.

7. Squeeze and release the trigger gun several times after holding it for a few seconds to make sure the antifreeze flows into the unloader system.

For oil-fired machines make sure to drain the fuel (from fuel tank, fuel line, fuel valve, and carburetor) and oil from the engine and replenish engine oil to upper level.


Winterize Hotsy Electric Pressure Washer - HSS & HSDS


Properly storing your machine will protect the engine from corrosion and damage that may occur during storage.


Winterize a Hotsy HSS & HSDS Electric Pressure Washer - Float Tank


For Hotsy Electric Pressure Washers, it is recommended to use automotive engine antifreeze or windshield washer solvent to antifreeze.


1. Mix 50/50 solution of anti-freeze and water.

2. Pour into float tank.

3. Turn engine on.

4. Siphon the anti-freeze mixture through the machine.


Tip: If compressed air is available, an air fitting can be screwed into the float tank to blow out the water in the machine. (First remove the float tank strainer and fitting. Then inject the compressed air. The water will be blown out of the machine when the trigger on the spray gun is opened).


5. Press trigger on the trigger gun to circulate antifreeze through machine.

6. Squeeze and release the trigger gun several times after holding it for a few seconds to make sure the antifreeze flows into the unloader system.


Tip: For added protection after running antifreeze through machine, disconnect the pressure hose and remove the coil drain plug. After coil has drained, replace pressure hose and coil drain plug.


7. Draw antifreeze through the detergent inlet line to antifreeze the detergent system.

Winterize a Hotsy Electric Pressure Washer - Models 965SS, 106SS, 1065SSE, 1075SSE, & 871SS


Store machine in a warm, heated area and flush the system with antifreeze or windshield washer solvent to antifreeze to prevent freezing. For Hotsy Electric Pressure Washers, it is recommended to use automotive engine antifreeze or windshield washer solvent to antifreeze.


1. Connect water supply hose to the garden hose connector located on the pump.

2. Turn on water supply.

3. Place the detergent inlet line into a container of antifreeze.

4. Hold wand firmly, release trigger of trigger gun.

5. Turn engine on.

6. Place throttle lever in full throttle position.

7. Squeeze trigger of trigger gun so water can flow through machine to the wand.

7a. Watch for antifreeze to flow through the detergent inlet line.

7b. Flush system with antifreeze for 5 - 10 seconds.

8. Release the trigger of the trigger gun.

Turn engine off.

Turn water supply off.

Disconnect water supply hose from the pump.

Attach hose to the garden hose connector located on the pump.


Tip: Use approximately a 3 foot long hose


Instal a funnel in the other end of the hose.

Hold wand firmly, release the trigger of the trigger gun.

Turn Engine on.

Place throttle lever in the idle position.

Squeeze trigger on trigger gun.

Slowly pour antifreeze into the funnel until antifreeze flows from the end of the wand.

Squeeze and release the trigger of the trigger multiple tims so antifreeze can flow into the unloader system.

Release the trigger of the trigger gun.

Turn engine off.

Squeeze the trigger of the trigger gun to relieve system pressure.


Tip: For additional protection, disconnect the pressure hose from the machine and remove the coil drain plug. Let drain then replace pressure hose and coil drain plug.


Disconnect the garden hose, wand, and gun. Unplug your pressure washer and store it in an warm area (40 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer). Do not store flammable liquids near pressure washer or in a non-ventiliated area.



If your machine has gas remaining in the tank use a fuel stabilizer to prevent that gas from gumming up causing a blockage in the lines. Make sure to remove all detergent and water from the pressure washer machine as well.


Winterize a HydroTek Gas Pressure Washer


Before winterizing your pressure washer check that you have antifreeze and fuel stabilizer! Always check the user manual for winterizing your pressure washer or if you have any questions consult with the manufacturer or contact NorTex Sales & Services and ask an expert.


Winterizing a HydroTek Pressure Washer - Non-Float Tank:


1. Prepare a gallon with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.

2. Use a 5’ garden hose to connect to the machine.


Tip: Use compressed air to blow out the unit until no water comes out of the discharge.


3. Draw the antifreeze mix into the machine.

4. Turn the machine on.

5. Run until antifreeze appears at the high-pressure outlet.

6. Turn the machine off.

7. Remove garden hose and prepare for storage.


If your machine has gas remaining in the tank use a fuel stabilizer to prevent that gas from gumming up causing a blockage in the lines. Make sure to remove all detergent and water from the pressure washer machine as well.


Winterizing a HydroTek Pressure Washer - Float Tank:


1. Prepare a gallon with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.

2. Remove the cover of the float tank.

3. Add antifreeze to the float tank until it is full.


Tip: If the unit is equipped with a blowout valve, it may be blown out with compressed air in addition to using antifreeze to winterize the pressure washer.


4. Turn machine on.

5. Run until antifreeze appears at the high-pressure outlet.

6. Turn the machine off.

7. Cover the float tank and prepare for storage.


If your machine has gas remaining in the tank use a fuel stabilizer to prevent that gas from gumming up causing a blockage in the lines. Make sure to remove all detergent and water from the pressure washer machine as well.
